    John F. Kennedy becomes president
    John F. Kennedy became President of the United States in 1960. He was the youngest man elected as presdient. John F. Kennedy was the first Catholic president. During his term he dealt with the Cold War, Vietnam War, Bay of Pigs, and the Cuban Missle crisis. John F. Kennedy's term ended 1963 from being assassinated.

    Martin Luther King Jr. makes the " I have a dream speech"
    On August 28, 1963 Martin LutherKing Jr. gave the " I Have A Dream" speech. He said the speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. He did the speech to end racial seperation. He had over 200,000 followers that he delivered his speech to. Martin Luther King became the man of the year due to his speech.

    John F. Kennedy was assassinated while riding in his car in Dealey Plaza in Dallas. He was shot at 12:30 on Friday, November 22, 1963. He died at 1:00 at Parkland Hospital. He was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald who was a former Marine.

    Gulf of Tonkin Incident (August 2 & 4)
    The Gulf of Tonkion Incident happened on August 28,1964 when North Vietnamese torpedo ships attacked the USS Maddox. This was the first attack of the the in incident. The second attack was on August 4. American airplaines were sent to attack the ships but there was no succcess in finding them. On August 10 the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was issued by Lyndon B. Johnson

    First U.S troops land in Vietnam
    On March 8,1965 Lyndon B. Johnson sent 3,500 US Marines into Da Nang South Vietnam. This would be known as " Operation Rolling Thunder." The reason why he sent the Mrines to Vietnam is the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. When they landed there was reported gunfire from the Vietcong, no one was killed. Over 58,000 US troops are killed before the fall of Saigon in 1975.

    The Geat blackout of 1965 did not only happen to New York but also to Ontario, Canada, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, and New Jersey. Over 30 million people were without power spread over 80,000 miles and left people without power for 12 hours. It was caused by a person set a saftey relay on the transmission lines. There were still some neighborhoods in New York that did not loose power. Everyone recieved power by 7:00 on March 10.

    On July 16 the first successful mission to the moon was made by the US. It was Apollo 11 that landed on the moon carrying three men, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin E. Aldrin. Neil Armstrong was the first of the men to step foot on the moon and he said while stepping on the moon " Thats one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." The Merican flag was left on the moon to prove Americas achievement. The Apollo 11 mission weas a success and they arrived to earth july 24,1969.

    The Kent State shootings happened at Kent State University in Kent,Ohio. It happened due to a pprotest from kent State students over the Vietnam war. It involved student getting shot by the Ohio National Guard. There were 67 total shots fired in 13 seconds leaving 4 students dead. The shootings lead to the closing of over a 100 universities and high schools in the US because 4 million students went on strike.

    Nixon announces the end of involvement of US troops in Vietnam
    On January 23,1973 president Nixon announced the that the US made a treaty with Vietnam and that the US was officially out of the War. It was called the Paris Peace Accords.The peace agreement allowed a 60 day time period for US troops to leave Vietnam. All US prisoners of war were also released. The war was over for the US but the peace agreement did not last between North and South Vietnam.

    The end of the Vietnam War was caused by the fall of the Saigon in South Vietnam. The United States had 58,119 dead , 153,303 wounded, and 1,948 missing in combat. The Republic of Vietnam had 230,000 people, and 1,169,763 wounded. Between the North Vietnamese army and the Vietcong 1,100,000 were killed in combat. There were 2-4 civilians died during the war.
