Vietnam was temporarily divided at the 17th parallel line until an election was held to unify the country. A communist called Ho Chi Minh controlled the North and the South was led by Ngo Diem. -
Golf of Tonkin Incident
North Vietnamese patrol boast fired on the USS Madox, which was deep in the Northern territory. Two days later, the USS Madox fired on the North Vietnamese. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
US military aircrafts bombed targets throughout North Vietnam. 50,000 Us troops also fought against Vietcongs. -
Tet Offensive
80,000 Vietcongs came out from tunnels and attacked major cities and military bases in South Vietnam. However, the US forces took back all of the lost territory. -
My Lai Massacre
American soldiers fired on several hundred Vietnamese women and children in a village called My Lai. The soldiers also did many horrible things to the girls in the village and burned the village. -
Kent State Massacre
The students in Kent State University protested against the bombing in Cambodia. The National Guards were ordered to ho and maintain order; they shot and killed 4 students.
