Eisenhower Explains his "Domino Theory"
Eisenhower explained that as communism spreads, more and more countries fall to communism just like dominoes continue to fall. The countries are similar to the dominoes because once one country converts to communism, then they all do. He explained that the Vietnamese would fall to the theory as well. -

The agreement separated Vietnam into two different sections.The north side was to be run and governed by communist Vietnamese citizens and the South was to be run by the state of Vietnam and the old emperor. -
The Vietcong Begin Attacks on the Diem Government
The communist Vietcong began to orchestrate attacks against the southern government in order to get rid of the old leader and turn to communism. They began trying to take over the government by assassinating the leader. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
When U.S. naval ships were shot at by the communists of Vietnam, the U.S. decided to make the resolution. It permitted the president to send troops and make war in Vietnam without actually declaring war. The president could do what he wanted without officially declaring war. -
Operation Rolling Thunder Began
The U.S. engaged in the war through this operation and began a full staged bombing of the Vietnamese communist to pressure them to stop trying to convert to communism. This was the first true time the military got engaged fully in the war and did warlike actions of Vietnamese territory. -
My Lai Massacre
Vietnamese civilians were innocently killed by U.S. troops as they opened fire on hundreds of women and children which killed hundreds. -
Nixon Wins the Election
Nixon won the 46th presidential election as a Republican and former vice president of the United States. He defeated the democratic nominee Hubert Humphrey.
