During the Buddhist holiday Tet 80,000 Vietcong troops attacked almost every major metropolitan center in south Vietnam. -
My Lai Massacre
American soldiers opened fire on hundreds of women and children in My Lai. 300 to 500 people where killed and this made the american public outraged. -
Kent State Massacre
Protesters were protesting Nixon expanding the war. The U.S. National Guard was sent in and killed 4 students and injured several others. -
Pentagon Papers Being Published in the New York Times.
A top secret overview of the history of the Governments involvement in Vietnam was published in the New York Times. This caused the american people to be enraged at the government because they learned how much they were lied to. -
26th amendment
Tons of college age students were being drafted to fight in the Vietnam war, but they felt it was unfair that they could put their lives on the line but they could not vote. Therefore the 26th amendment was passed and this made 18 the voting age. -
Cease fire
in January 1973 a cease fire went into effect and combat troops were withdrawn and returned to America. -
War Powers Act
An act that said that the president must inform congress within 48 hours of sending troops into a hostile area without declaration of war. It also stated that Troops can remain no longer than 90 days unless congress approves of these actions or declares war.
