    formed in September of 1954, the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization's purpose was to stop communist expansion.

  • Dien Bien Phu

    the French forces were trapped by the vietminh and had a long battle until on May 7th, the French forces finally gave in.

  • international peace conference

    In Geneva, Switzerland, France grants independence to Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.

  • SDS

    The Students for a Democratic Society campainged for the war to end in Vietnam.

  • Johnsons frist crisis

    Johnson faced his first Vietnam crisis when North Vietnamese fired torpedos at The USS Maddox.

  • Operation rolling thunder

    this was the first sustained bombing campaign against North Vietnam and to try to convince North Vietnam to stop reinforcing the vietcong.

    The United States and North Vietnam finally reached an agreement to cease-fire
