    In respnse to the attack on the U.S. destroyers the U.S. passes the gulf of tonkin resolution.
  • Operation Rolling Thunder

    The U.S. begins an arieal bombing campaign. (Operation Rolling Thunder)
  • U.S. sends in the first combat troops.

  • Tet offensive

    The Tet offensive was a big suprise attack against about 100 South Vietnamese cities and towns. The attack was carried out by the North Vietnamese and the Vietkong.
  • Mai Lai

    U.S. soldiers kill hundreds of South Vietnamese civilians in the town of Mai Lai
  • general replacement

    General William Westmoreland is replaced by General Creighton Abrams
  • Vietnamization

    President Nixon announced his vietnamization plan. It would mean that the U.S. would attempt to train and arm South Vietnamese troops so the U.S. could decrease their ground presence.
  • The first U.S. troops are sent home.

    Nixon orders forms a phased troop withdrawl plan that has 14 stages.
  • Cambodia

    The president anounces his plan to attack Viet Cong bases in Cambodia. Many americans protest against the invasion of Cambodia.
  • Kent State

    National Guardsman open fired on a crowd of protesters at Kent State. 4 people were killed and 8 others wounded.
  • 26th Amendment

    This amendment to the constitution lowered the voting ate from 21 to 18. The main reason behind it was the vietnam war. Young men were being drafted and sent to war to risk their lives for the U.S. but they couldn't vote.
  • War Powers Act

    The War Powers Act was created to check the presidents power to send the U.S. into an armed conflict. The president can only be engaged in cnflict for 60 days unless it is authorized.
  • South Vietnam surrenders to the communists.

  • Unified Vietnam

    Vietnam is unified as communist country. Becoming the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
