    She went on night duty with her friend Ruth. Ruth was worried about her brother who was a soldier and Clara comforted her. The two of them created friendships with their patients and would give them treats.

    She was stationed at a hospital in Blois, France treating soldiers when they started hearing distant firing. The following days there were many patients emitted to the hospital.

    Surgery Ward Near Chateau Thierry
    She was working on a surgery, when the field hospital was visited by General Pershing. That same day she was working in the Jaw Ward with the facially disfigured soldiers and President Wilson visited. Everyone could see that he was very upset when he left the ward.

    Germany planned to invade through Belgium and surround France to fight in a two front war. Germany started to attack Belgium and powered through until they got where they wanted. The plan worked to surround France but fighting a two front war worked against them in the end.
  • The First Battle of Marne

    The First Battle of Marne
    French and British troops confronted the German army which had been invading France deep into the northeast within 30 miles of Paris. After Germany lost the battle trench warfare came into effect.
  • Air Raid

    Air Raid
    She watched an air raid from the hospital and a soldier pulled her away right before a bomb went off right where she was standing. There was a shelling by German Big Bertha guns. The curtains in the hospital caught on fire, ether cans exploded, and a lot of medical equipment was destroyed.

    Gallipoli Campaign

    The Allies tried to win against the Ottoman Empire while Europe was settled in a stalemate. After their failed attack on the Dardanelles the Allied forces launched a large scale invasion on the Gallipoli Peninsula. It was another failure and in January the Allied forces made a full retreat after suffering 250,000 casualties.
  • Battle of Isonzo

    Battle of Isonzo
    The first battle happened in the late spring after Italy joined the Allies. In the 12th battle (Battle of Caporette) in October 1917, Germany sent reinforcements to help Austria-Hungary win. After that the Allies went to help Italy and together they took back the Italian front.

    The Battle of Somme

    This was one of the deadliest and longest battles, there were 57,000 casualties including over 19,000 people killed on the first day alone. On July 1st British and French troops split up to take on Germany's forces. At the end of the battle more than 1 million people were killed or injured.
  • Second Battle of Marne

    Second Battle of Marne
    The German army launched an attack on French forces including 85,000 American troops and some of the British Expeditionary Force. The Allies pushed back German forces and staged their own counter attack in just 3 days. Germany gave up and decided to call of an attack that was set up further north.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles
    Allied forces talked about wanting a world of peace without war. They created the treaty and everyone signed it, including Germany. It ultimately ended the war despite Germany feeling tricked into signing. At the end of the war 9 million soldiers were left dead, 21 million people were wounded, and 10 million civilians were killed.

    After Armistice
    After the Armistice she visited the battle field at Reims in Paris and celebrated. She got in trouble for going to an enlisted men's dance. She also distributed pajamas to the soldiers without knowing that they had bed bugs and it created a whole new problem (it was fixed eventually).
