  • Proclomation of 1763

This proclomation did not allow colonists to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. The British government feared the conflict between colonists and Native Americans would lead to another war. They also could not afford to pay British troops to defend the western lands. Colonists were enraged by this proclomation because they felt they had won the right to settle in the Ohio River Valley after winning the French and Indian War.
  • Period: to

    Road to Revolution

  • Quartering Act of 1765

The Quartering Act of 1765 was a law that stated that the colonists must house, feed, and supply British soldiers. Since the British wanted to keep peace with the Native Americans, they had to keep 10,000 of their soldiers in the colonies. This was why they needed the colonists to house the troops. This act saved a lot of money for the British, but made the colonists very angry. They didn't want to give away their own supplies to their enemys.
  • Stamp Act of 1765

Because Britain needed more revenue to supply their soldiers, Parliament passed the Stamp Act in 1765. This law required that a government known stamp was to be placed on all legal documents shipped into the colonies. This stamp showed that the document was taxed. If someone were to be found without the stamp, the punishments could be a large fine or even worse. As a result, the colonists felt like they had no say in decisions like these and were very angry.
  • Townshend Acts of 1767

Even though Britain was afraid that the colonists would protest again, they still needed revenue, so they passes the Townshend Acts. This suspended New York's assembly until they agreed to house British troops. It also put a tax on a variety of items shipped into the colonies. Some colonists, of course, didn't want to pay these taxes, so they smuggled the goods. British soldiers would search through peoples' homes to find these goods.
  • Tea Act / Boston Tea Party of 1773

After the Townshend Acts, Parliament decided that all acts exept the one on tea were repealed. This, obviously, was called the Tea Act. This law placed a tax on all tea impoted to the colonies. Also, to make matters worse (for the colonists), people could only buy tea from one tea industry. To protest this act, colonists in South Carolina got together on ships and threw a large amount of crates of tea overboard. Britain reacted harshly to this act of foolishness.
  • Intolerable Acts of 1774

The Boston Tea Party enraged Britain so much that they decided to "teach" the colonists a lesson. Parliament passed the Intolerable Acts in 1774. This act closed Boston ports until the destroyed tea was paid for. Also, it allowed British soldiers to stay in the colonists' homes whenever they wanted. This was a main cause that started the Revolutionary War.
  • Battles of Lexington and Concord

Lexington and Concord were the first location that the Revolutionary War took palce in. The Patriots, which supported America, were nearly 4,000 men. The British, or Loyalists, didn't have nearly enough men to face the colonists, so they retreated. The colonists had won this battle.
  • Olive Branch Petition of 1775

The Olive Branch Petition was a treaty for King George written by the colonists. It stated rights for the colonists while also being loyal to Britain. The King rejected this petition and fought anyway. He would soon regret this decision.
  • Declaration of Independence

After many battles with Britain, America finally won the war. They could now declare independance. The Declaration of Independance was a document that stated all rights to freedom for the Americans. This declaration broke the loyalty to Britain and made America an Independant country.
