Updated DFA timeline

  • DFA letter to faculty

Following the first of three meetings between the DFA and admin, DFA president Anthony Stewart sends a letter to faculty calling a strike vote for the following week. According to the DFA's chief negotiator, "the Board’s team is showing no serious interest in concluding a collective agreement." For more information, read Katrina Pyne's article here.
  • Second conciliation meeting

The DFA and administration meet with a conciliator for the second time. According to Dal admin blog, the meetings went well. But the next day the DFA calls a press conference scheduled for Feb. 10. Information on how conciliation meetings in Nova Scotia work is here.
  • Letter sent to parents/students

The DFA posts a letter on their website addressed to Dal's students and their parents, explaining the state of negotiations. The letter is available here.
  • DFA press conference

The DFA talks to the media for the first time about how the meetings are going and what to expect for the next few weeks. Contrary to the optimistic tone of Dal admin's negotiations blog, Stewart says none of the real issues have been addressed. More information is available here.
  • DFA general meeting

In the same letter to the DFA that called a strike vote, Anthony Stewart also called this general meeting for all faculty to hear the report of the chief negotiator for the DFA.
  • Period: to

    DFA strike vote

The DFA will vote during this period to determine whether, if no agreement can be reached & conciliation fails, the faculty wants to strike.
  • Last conciliation meeting

The last time the DFA and admin will meet with a third party. According to Dal Admin blog, the focus will be on the pension, which is the biggest issue of negotiations. After this meeting, the conciliator will make his report to the Ministry of Labour and Advanced Education. UPDATE: Rumours conciliation did not succeed. That DOES NOT MEAN STRIKE IS HAPPENING.
  • Period: to

    Two-week wait

This starts after the conciliator has filed his report, which was done on Feb. 24. If there's no agreement and faculty have voted to strike, they must wait out this period before stopping work. The two sides can and likely will still negotiate during this period, but they will not have a mediator as they did during conciliation. At the time of writing (Feb. 24) the two sides have not scheduled any further meetings.
  • DFA move headquarters

Since current headquarters of the DFA (located on South St) is owned by Dalhousie, the DFA is moving to Dresden Row in case of a strike.
  • DFA general meeting

Another general meeting is scheduled for Feb. 29 and the DFA website advises members to bring their ID so they can vote. It is not specified what they will be voting for.
  • Notification to government

In the event that conciliation fails, all other negotiation fails, and a majority of faculty members vote to strike, by law the DFA would need to notify the Ministry of Labour and Advanced Education 48 business hours before they intend to strike. This is the earliest that they could do that. In those 48 hours, they could still come to an agreement with Dal admin. NOTE: Since the conciliator did not file his report on the 15th, this date will change.
  • Strike date

This is the date on which the DFA can legally strike.
