Dihn Diem were banning buddist traditions once he took office, as he was a strict catholic. As a protest, buddist monks would go in the middle of the strreet and burn themselves to death. -

Kent State Shooting
when over 1000 college students stood outside their school in protest against the expansion of war in Cambodia.It was a peaceful protest, but the guards who shot at the crowd claimed to be responding to shots fired at them which was from a sniper on a neighboring rooftop. Four students were shot and killed while many others wher injured.
