Sinking of the USS Maine, Future 2
The sinking of the USS Maine united the American people against Spain. Spain was seen as treacherous and barbarious. The song by Mary Elizabeth Lamb helped further this feeling by calling for vengeance: "Awake! it is no dream; Dost hear the sailors scream? Comrades will you go? Avenge the cruel blow!" This represents future 2 because The United States is declaring war on Spain and invading Cuba as a direct response to an attack on our assets. -
McKinley
Mckinley justifies his reasons of why he wanted to intervene with Cuba. He is asking to declare war against Spain. "...to put an end to the barbarities, bloodshed, starvation, and horrible miseries now existing there..." (Source 2). Represents future 1 because it spread democracy by trying to help Cuba. Also represented future 2 because it was protecting business. -
Teller
America planned to help Cuba and stabalize their country. After Cuba was stable, they would leave them to govern themselves. "Exercise sovereignty, jurisdiction control...when that is accomplished, to leave the government and control of the island to its people" (Source 4). Future 1 is represented because it spread democracy by helping Cuba. -

Beveridge gave a speech that America should not force democracy in Cuba for the benefits that it provides (employment and better wages for the U.S.) "If England can govern foreign lands, so can America. If Germany can govern foreign lands, so can America...Ah! as our commerce spreads, the flag of liberty will circle the globe" (Source 6). Future 2 is represented because the U.S. used Cuba for their resources. -
The Secretary of State Bryan to President Wilson
The Secretary of State said giving loans to a foreign country at war is not being neutral, but giving loans to countries who are also neutral is okay
"There is no reason why loans should not be made to the governments of neutral nations, but in the judgment of this Government, loans by American bankers to any foreign nation which is at war are inconsistent with the true spirit of neutrality"
