  • Acadians are exiled from their homes

Acadians are exiled from their homes
The Acadians were exiled from their homes because the British wanted their farmlands for themselves. The Acadians were French Canadian's, most of whom were born here and did not want to give up their home. This is important to their Canadian identity because they are now very proud of their background and won't be pushed around again. Francophone: I chose this category because they are a french speaking people.
  • The Conquest (Battle on the Plains of Abraham)

The Conquest (Battle on the Plains of Abraham)
This battle had French troops against English, with their respective Generals Louis‑Joseph de Montcalm and James Wolfe leading the charge. This was a fight over the fate of New France. This event is important to Canada because it marks when the British really did gain much of the power and the French seemed to be a lot less important. They had their rights though Canada: I think this one would be Canada because both the French and British were involved.
  • The Royal Proclamation determines that First Nations are sovereign

The Royal Proclamation determines that First Nations are sovereign
The Royal proclamation declares that ownership of North America belongs to the kind but that Aboriginal people are sovereign people and that all land is considered theirs and treaties must be signed. This is important because it shows that we did have some sort of respect for First Nations and that we know they were here first. Aboriginal: This definitely concerns the indigenous community because it is directly talking about their land and them being sovereign.
  • Lord Durham’s report encourages the assimilation of the Francophone colonists

Lord Durham’s report encourages the assimilation of the Francophone colonists
Lord Durham had some good things in his list of recommendations but one thing that many Francophones were mad about was that he thought they should be assimilated. He believed that having more than one culture and language is too chaotic. This is important because it showed how willing people were to just snap away another person's culture and shows how much we've grown as people over the years. Francophones: They kept becoming less important. The minority. They always seemed to be the lesser.
  • The Indian Act is first created

The Indian Act is first created
The Indian Act was basically a piece of paper saying that the First Nations will be forced to lose their culture and become Europeans because they were weird and different. This was important because it's an ugly part of Canada's past that we have to apologize and move on from but we have learned from it and Indediounous people are treated more equally nowadays. We are still trying to mend the past. Aboriginal: It obviously seriously affected them as it was taking away their identity
  • Chinese Head Tax discriminates against Chinese immigration

Chinese Head Tax discriminates against Chinese immigration
During the time the railway was being built they needed the workers and a lot of Chinese workers came over to Canada for work but after the railroad was done being built Canada decided they didn't want them here anymore. It stated that every person of Chinese origin immigrating to Canada had to pay a fee of $50. Canada
  • Louis Riel is executed for treason

Louis Riel is executed for treason
Louis Riel took part in the resistance against the government because they were trying to take over Metis land by force. He was then executed for treason. This is important because he was standing up to the government for what he believed in and his people's rights, which takes so much courage and helped the Metis gain more rights. Aboriginal: Because the Metis are part Indigenous peoples
  • Manitoba Schools Question becomes an issue in the federal election

Manitoba Schools Question becomes an issue in the federal election
This crisis eventually spread to a national level and became one of the issues in the federal election. Defeated the conservated government. This contributes to the Canadian perspective because it affects the French Canadians of Canada. Their language, rights, and culture were in jeopardy it shows their perspective and that they want to have their own schools. French: I think this would fit in the French Category because it involves French Canadian schools and their language.
  • Conscription crisis during World War One

Conscription crisis during World War One
Was a political-military crisis it was mainly caused by a disagreement on whether men should be conscripted to fight in the war. This event is important to Canadian identity because it leads to giving men the choice of whether or not to fight in wars. Canada: Because it's whether or not conscription should be necessary for all men of a certain age.
  • The White Paper on Aboriginal Rights

The White Paper on Aboriginal Rights
Statement of the Government of Canada on Indian Policy. A paper that was an attempt to abolish previous legal documents relating to indigenous Canadians. This event relates to Canadian perspectives because it's showing that the government did want to fix the wrongs of the past but they were doing a terrible job of it. The First Nation's thought of this paper as offensive because they called it the white paper. Aboriginal: Because it relates directly to how they were treated in the past.
  • The FLQ Crisis during the Quiet Revolution

The FLQ Crisis during the Quiet Revolution
British diplomat James Cross, as well as Labour Minister Pierre Laporte, were both kidnapped by FLQ cells, with Laporte eventually being killed. This contributes to different perspectives of being Canadian because it's about the Quebecois people rebelling against the government and eventually leading to violent actions. Francophone: Because it relates to the people of Quebec and their identity as French Canadians.
  • Canada adopts official multiculturalism

    Canada adopts official multiculturalism
The announcement made by Pierre Trudeau making multiculturalism an official government policy. Multiculturalism is a huge part of Canada's identity because we come from all over the world and speak a number of different languages and yet we all live in the same country and feel a lot of pride in it. Canada: Because it's talking about all of Canada and its multiculturalism.
  • Bill 101 is passed into law in Quebec

Bill 101 is passed into law in Quebec
Bill 101 is a charter that was made to protect the French language to somewhat extreme lengths originally. This event was important to Canada because it helped Quebec feel more connected with their heritage and others who went there to have this sense of national pride that the Quebecois have and apply it in their own lives. Francophone: Because it involves French rights and language.
  • The NEP (National Energy Program) is implemented

The NEP (National Energy Program) is implemented
Its goal was to ensure that Canada could supply its own oil and gas needs by 1990 which meant it wasn't going to be yeeted all over the place with no restrictions. This has to do with the fact that Canada needs the gas and the oil that they do the work for themselves but so do other places in the world. Canada: This was a Canadian issue when the oil industry started getting kinda crappy for a little while.
  • Quebec refuses to sign the constitution

Quebec refuses to sign the constitution
Quebec refuses to sign the constitution of Canada that allowed them to change their consistions without approval from Brittan. This shows that Quebec has its own perspectives on things and its own reasons why they don't want to sign things for whatever reason. Francophone: Because it has to do with Quebec not signing the constitution.
  • The Oka Crisis

    The Oka Crisis
It was a standoff over the government wanting to build a golf course on sacred Mohawk memorial land and a police officer was accidentally killed. This is a great example of the two different perspectives of the government and the aboriginal people. The land is super important to them whereas to the government it is more of just an opportunity to build things. Aboriginal: This is relating to the Mohawk's connections to the land and how they are important to them.
  • Supreme Court determines that turbans can be worn with the RCMP uniform – reasonable accommodation

Supreme Court determines that turbans can be worn with the RCMP uniform – reasonable accommodation
A conflict over a police officer wanting to wear a turban. Canadian identity is a key thing here because a lot of people wear or have things that are very important to their culture that they should be able to have while still representing and being proud of their country. Canada: Different religions in Canada have different traditions.
  • The second referendum is held to decide if Quebec should separate from Canada

The second referendum is held to decide if Quebec should separate from Canada
Quebec having people vote whether or not they should separate from Canada and become their own independent country. This is a different perspective on what it means to be Canadian because the people of Quebec don't really feel like equals to the rest of Canada. Francophone: Because it has to do with the people of Quebec wanting to split from Canada.
  • Canada apologizes for Residential Schools

    Canada apologizes for Residential Schools
Justin Trudeau apologizes for the residential schools where the First Nations were sent to try and assimilate them. This is important to Canadian identity because we aren't just trying to shove the past in the trash and never look at it again we are trying to fix and resolve our mistakes. Aboriginal: Because it has to do with apologizing for our wrongs of the past against the indigenous people of Canada.
