    Spanish- American War
The Spanish-American war was caused by factors of the Cuban rebellion against Spain, the downfall of negotioations between President McKinley and Spain, and the unexplained explosion of the USS Maine off the coast of Cuba (as shown in the picture). As a result of the war, the US gained Puerto Rico and purchased the Phillipines, among other things gained/put in place.

    TR's Roosevelt Corollary
The Roosevelt Corollary of the Monroe Doctrine was put in place by Theodore Roosevelt, and stated that the US can intervene in any Latin American conflict. This statement coincides well with TR's Big Stick Policy ("Speak softly, and carry a big stick") which referred to US naval power in Latin America.
  • World War I- US Involvement

    World War I- US Involvement
The US refrained from any involvement in this war because of the country's long tradition of staying out of European affairs. Despite the US and President Woodrow Wilson's desire to stay neutral, war was declared on Germany in 1917 because Germany was sinking US neutral ships. On November 11th, 1918, Germany was defeated.
  • Dollar Diplomacy

    Dollar Diplomacy
Dollar diplomacy was a phrase coined by Samuel Guy Inman in 1924. It was a policy which emphasized the connection between America's economic and political interests overseas, which effected the sovereignty of multiple Latin American countries (US occupation of Haiti). Dollar diplomacy was most jprominent during William Howard Taft's presidency, who is shown in the picture.
  • Good Neighbor Policy

    Good Neighbor Policy
The Good Neighbor Policy was implemented during president Franklin D. Roosevelt's first year of presidency. It un-did Roosevelt's Corollary, in that it promoted friendly and welcoming connections with Latin America.
  • "Cash-and-Carry" System

    "Cash-and-Carry" System
The cash-and-carry policy stated that if a warring country wanted to buy non-military goods from the United States, they would have to pay the US with cash and carry the goods on their own ship. The policy was implemented to keep the US out of risk of naval warfare. Eventually, the US allowed the allies to buy arms (military goods) under the cash-and-carry system, to allow the US to help the allies as much as possible with out going to war.
  • Lend Lease Act- WWII

    Lend Lease Act- WWII
The Lend-Lease Act, implemented during WWII the year of 1941, authorized/enabled the president to "lend, lease, or dispose of" arms and equipment the Great Britain or any other country whose defense would be beneficial to the security of the United States. This act enabled FDR (Franklin D. Roosevelt) to help Great Britain as much as he could with the war with out actually letting the US go to war itself.

    Atlantic Charter
The Atlantic Charter was Franklin D. Roosevelt´s meeting witth British Prime Minister Winston Churchill which released a joint declaration/release. The meeting provided the ideological foundation of the western cause, and discussed the 14 Points and the 4 Freedoms. The meeting released a joint declaration which promised/discussed economic cooperation, national self-determination, and guarantees of political stability after the war. The joint declaration promoted and defended democracy.
  • WWII- US Involvment

    WWII- US Involvment
The US stayed out of WWII for as long as possible through policies such as the Lend-Lease Act and the "cash-and-carry' system, but still eventually became involved. One reason the US became involved was because France surrendered to Germany, and if Great Britain was defeated, Germany would have had power over Europe. Also, Japan was advancing in to China, causing the US to freeze all Japanese assets, which led to the bombing of the US base Pearl Harbor (Hawaii), and declaration of war followed.
