    • US won the war in four months, gaining control over Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines
  • Philippine War

    • after winning independence from Spain, the Philippines fought this war against the US for their independence
    • reports of the atrocities that were committed by Americans were widely publicized
  • Roosevelt Corollary

    • Theodore Roosevelt extended the Monroe Doctrine, stating the US had the right to protect economic interests
      • this would take place in South and Central America by using military force
  • NAACP

    • fought to abolish segregation and discrimination, to oppose racism and to gain civil rights for African Americans
      • Supreme Court declared grandfather clause unconstitutional
  • 16th Ammendment

    • Gave congress the power to tax income
  • 17th Amendment

    • this amendment called for the direct election of senators by the voters instead of their election by state legislature
  • 18th Amendment

    • banned the sale, manufacture, and transport of alcoholic beverages
    • this was repealed by the 21st amendment
