    Texas gained independence by Mericans pressuring imprisoned santa anna into signing the treaty giving texas independence. The mexico government refused to acknowledge it but ceased military efforts.
  • Alfred Thayer Mahan

    Alfred Thayer Mahan
    He was a US Navy admiral, strategist, and historian. He is hailed by many as "the most important American strategists of the 19th century". His concepts were based on sea power, whoever had greater naval force would have a greater world prescence.
  • Mexican American War

    The war was intiated by the US as a result of the thorton affair where us military forces were defeated by mexico along the rio grande. Mexico's loss resulted in half of it's northern territory going to the US and the recognition of Texas as an independent state.

    Alaska was purchased in 1867 from Russia and proved to be a rich source of natural resources such as oil and gold. It became a very important strategic point for the US during WW2.

    The battle was fought during the franco-prussian war it resulted in the capture of emperor napoleon III and large numbers of his troops. Napoleon called off his army and lost over 17000 men. The battle sealed the doom of France and turned it in Prussia's favor.

    The Panama Canal required a large work force of 40,000 men, the prestige of the project attracted the best french engineers but the mosquito infestation made it difficult to retain them, many dying of disease.

    It began with a sudden, illegal seizure of the territory by the US citizens residing there, it led to the end of Hawaiian Monarchy and the current Queen Lili'uokalani. Hawaii was eventually made an independent republic but was only part of the goal to annex the islands to the US.

    The First SIno-Japanese War was between the Qing Empire of China and the Empire of Japan, the war was mostly over who should have control over the Korean Peninsula. The result was the victory of Japan and a significant loss on the side of China.

    The battle was a secondary naval engagement of the war with a spanish victory, it resulted in an unusaully costly american reverse that dissuaded the US navy from undertaking further attacks.

    The capture of guam was a bloodless event betweent he US and spain. The US sent a single cruiser to capture guam however the spanish had no knowledge of the war and surrendered with no resistance.

    The campaign wasn an american military sea and land operation on puerto rico. The offensive began on may12th when the US navy attached san juan. the damage was minimal but the american were able to establish a blockade in the harbor.

    The Treaty of Paris was an agreement where Spain agreed to release it's control over most of the Spanish Empire (Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines) to America so the Spanish-American War would end. This treaty included the payment of 20 million from the US for the Philippines territory.

    It was the first and largest battle during the Philippine American War. The conflict broke out when Merica troops fired on an enroaching Filipinos, Aginaldo attempted a ceasefire but was rejected.

    The conflict arose when the first philippine republic objected tot the terms of the treaty of paris. Fighting ensued and when it had ended, America emerged as the victor. The US continued to occupy the territory and the First Philippine Republic dissolved.

    The Boxer Rebellion was an extremist movement in China against foreign and christian influences. The uprising was caused by the severe drought and chaos brought about through the growth of foreign spheres of influence.

    After the vicotry in the Spanish American War, the US wanted to further it's prescence in China commercially and politically but felt threatened by the other spheres of influence. The Open Door Policy was proposed and a letter written to the major countries in China saying that all nations would/could enjoy equal access to the Chinese market.

    The treaty was signed by the US and Panama, it established the Panama Canal Zone and the subsequent construction of it. AS part of the negotiations, teh US bought shares and assets for 40 million.

    The Roosevelt Corollary was the president's addition to the Monroe Doctrine in his state of the union address following the Venezuela Crisis. It states that the United States will intervene in conflicts between Latin America and Europe, the US will act as a middle man, enforcing legitimate claims of Europe rather than have them do it directly.

    The Great White Fleet was a nickname given to the US Navy Battle Fleet ordered to circle the globe in an effort to demonstrate American military power and intimidate other nations. It was ordered on its world tour by Theodore Roosevelt as part of his Big Stick Diplomacy campaign.

    Dollar Diplomacy was used extensively in the Manchurian region of China. Taft believed Manchurians railroads were the key to economic success. Sec of State, Knox propsed they purcase it from the Russia and China, and return it to chinese control, he was rejected.

    AS world war one erupts acorss Europe, President Wilson decides to formally declare the neutrality of the US, a position that many favored.

    During ww1, germany waged submarine warfare against the UK, the lusitania was identified and torpedoed by a u boat. It killed over 1100 people, 128 of whom were american.

    Foreign minister Zimmerman asks Mexico to join Germany in exchange for return of southwest US British intercept message. This act would almost certainly lead to war.

    When the armed US steamer Aztec was torpedoed and 28 of its members drowned, Wilson decided to propose US involvement in the war. "The world must be safe for democracy"

    It was the first American battle and offensive of ww1. It answered the question of whether or not the arriving american doughboys would join an indpendent american field army or serve as replacements in the french and british armies.

    The armistice of 11 november 1918 was an armistice during the first ww between the allies and germany. It was an agremment to cease the fighting on the western front. It was put into effect at "the elventh hour of the eleventh day opf the eleventh month".

    Red Scare is the support of fearing a potenital growth in communism or radical leftism. In the US the First was centered around the worker revolution and political radicalism which was brought to light following the Bolshevik Revolution of Russia.

    It was one of the peace treaties at the end of the war. It ended the state of war between germany and the allid powers. The other central powers were dealt with in separate treaties. It was made to require germany to accept all the loss and damage they caused.

    In June the people of Hawaii voted by a wide majority to accept admittance into the US. In August Hawaii became the 50th and final state of America.
