  • Meiji Restoration

    From 1868-89
    In 1867, the Japanese people insisted that an emperor be reinstated as head of governement, instead of the military shotgun. Emperor Meiji was instated as head of government, and the next year (1868), he starte planning, along with his government, to modernize Japan. All once independent regions of Japan came under ond goverment in the capital city (Tokyo). Japan's education system, military, form of government, and industries changed to match those of western nations.
