    First Union for Working Women
    Lowell Mill women created the first union and even went on strike. The union was to regulate the environment and the work days. The published Factory Tracts to expose the dangers of the mill.
  • Atlanta's Washerwomen Strike

    Atlanta's Washerwomen Strike
    African American women wanted a higher wage for their efforts. The women established a $1.00 wage rate for every twelve pounds per laundry. The strike was successful.
  • The Battle of Cripple Creek

    The Battle of Cripple Creek
    Gold Miners wanted an eight-hour work and three dollars a day wage. This is the only time the militia was called out in support of the strikers. It was a success.
  • Great Southwest Strike of 1886

    Great Southwest Strike of 1886
    Strike against Union Pacific and Missouri Pacific to try and fix unsafe conditions and unjust pay and hours. The strike included five states and 200,000 workers. The strike was deemed unsuccessful.
  • Steel Strike of 1919

    Steel Strike of 1919
    The Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers (AA) tried to organize the steel industry after WW I. Steelworkers were upset about employers refusing to improve working conditions, and raising wages.The strike was unsuccessful.
  • Railway Labor Act

    Railway Labor Act
    This Federal Law takes care of railroad and airline industries. The act settles any disputes that take place in either industry. The act is similar to the National Labor Relations Act.
  • National Labor Relations Act

    National Labor Relations Act
    The act prohibited employers to deny employees from joining unions. The act also allows for peaceful strikes to take place. The act does not cover individuals involved by the Railway Labor Act.
  • 1970 U.S. Postal Strike

    1970 U.S. Postal Strike
    The strike was to demand a higher wage, safe working conditions, and increased benefits. The strike was deemed illegal by the federal government and the national guard and armed forces had to deliver the mail. The strike was a successful.
  • UPS workers strike

    UPS workers strike
    The strike was to correct job security, wages, and part-time employee status. Prior to the strike, Many UPS' started switching full-time employees with part-time workers. UPS lost over $600 million.
  • Wages and the Fair Labor Standards Act

    Wages and the Fair Labor Standards Act
    This law sets minimum wage at $7.25 an hour. The law also set over-time. Child Labor is also addressed in the act.
