The slaves were taken to America and tobacco, sugar and cotton were taken back to England. Between the years 1700 and 1800 ca. 250,000 slaves were taken to America. Most people thought it was ok to have slaves. President Abraham Lincoln managed to ensure the freedom of slaves. Slaves was one on the issues that led to a civil war between the Northern and Southern states (1861-1865). -

After the second world war (1945) segregation and discrimination were still common. In 1954 the supreme court decided that ’’separate but equal’’ was no longer constitutional.Segregation of public schools were no longer allowed. -

Many people protested and this was the end of segregation on public buses. Martin Luther King Jr. was leader of Civil Rights Movement. His speech “I have a dream” in the March on Washington in 1963 is famous. -

Barack Obama was president from 2009 to 2017. It was tempting to think that everyone now had equal rights and opportunities in the US.
