  • Monroe Doctrine

    Monroe Doctrine
    James Monroe's address to congress was known as the Monroe Doctrine. It articulated the United States’ policy on the new political order developing in the rest of the Americas and the role of Europe in the Western Hemisphere.
  • Treaty of Wanghia

    Treaty of Wanghia
    This treatie allowed American citizrns to purchase murchandiese in the five treaty ports. This gave the US trading rights. Americans could buy land and build churches, hospitals, and burial grounds in the five treaty ports. The Americans did this for economic and social reasons.
  • Opening Trade with Japan

    Opening Trade with Japan
    On July 8, 1853 Mathew Perry lead 4 ships into Tokyo Bay seeking re-establishment with Japan. The US had multiple reasons for getting involved with Japan like; regulating trade, secure a station to rest ships passing through, Japans coal supply, and whaling ships that need a safe harbor. Alaska was purchased for economical and military reasons.
  • Ostend Manifesto

    Ostend Manifesto
    This was the high point in US drive to slave territories in the Caribbean. Three US diplomats advocated the US seizure of Cube from Spain if they refused the offer to buy it in Ostend, Belg. When they were rejected and the contence of the deal leaked out, the Republican press branded it as a “manifesto” appealing to Southern opinion.
  • The Purchase of Alaska

    The Purchase of Alaska
    Russia offered to sell Alaska to the U.S. in 1859. The civil war delayed the sale but after the war the secretary of state, William Seward, took up the still standing offer. On March 30, 1867 they agreed to purchase Alaska for $7.2 million. The state approved this purchase on April 9, 1867 and President Andrew Johnson signed the treaty on October 8, 1867. This purchase ended Russia’s presents in North America. It was bought for political and military reasons.

    Hawaii is taken over
    From 1840 onto the next four decades hawaii entered into a number of treaties with the US. In 1887 a US navel base was established in Pearl Harbor as part of a new constitution. In 1891 a queen refused to give up her power and broke the US treaty of 1887. Hawaii wished to be annexed, but senate denied it. Hawaii was taken for political reasons, economic reasons, and military reasons.

    Venezuela and the UK had an argument over the territories of Essequibo and Guayana Esequiba. In 1898 the US had a right to intervene because they were violating the Monroe Doctorine.They argued because of political reasons, and economical reasons.

    The Americans went to war with Spain to free Cuba from them. On Feb. 15, 1898 an explosion sank the US Maine and we blamed Spain. We told them to free Cuba and if they didn't they would go to war. On May 1, 1898 Amarica s won the war! This war was fought for military reasons, and political reasons.

    This was a group of chinese people who banded together and practiced boxing in the hopes of killing all foriengers in the country. They did this to protect the culture. Many people were killed including several foriegn ministers and their families before the international forces could stop them; American, British, Russian, French, Italian, and Japanese soldiers. We enterd into this because of military, political and social reasons.
  • U.S Annexes the Phillippiness

    U.S Annexes the Phillippiness
    In 1899, the United States annexed the Philippines after a short but bloody war with Spain. Just two days before ratification a fight broke out between US armys and Philippine nationalist, lead by Emilio Aguinaldo. The war lasted three years and eventually in 1946 the US granted the Phillippiness their freedom. This was done for political reasons as well as economic reasons.
  • Open Door policy

    John Hays open door policy notes promoted equal opportunities for trade and commerece in China. Hays sent the first notes on Sptember 6, 1899 to all the great powers who were interested. Hays believed that this would benifit traders economically, and help prevent social views of the nationality. This would also help our economy immensily.

    A bill to end the presence of United States forces in Cuba. This happend for political, military, and social reasons.

    The US and Great Britain made plans to build the canal but never got any farther because the french came in. After lossing 20,000 men due to desease the French gave up. US steped in and built the cannal. This was for economic reasons, as well as military.

    President Roosevelt assertiveness twords Latin America is often referd to as "the big stick". His policy was known as Roosevelt's Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine. This was because of economic, social, political, and military reasons.

    The Gentlemen's Agreement with the agreement between Japan and America that the Japanees would deny passports to the US because of exsessive imigration of Japanees people. This was because of social reasons.
