They were lead by the Donner brothers, Jacob and George, While trying to cut their travel short they got themselves caught in the Sierra Nevada Mountains for the entire winter, they reduced themselves to canabalism to survive. This is an influential event because once the story spread, it made everyone finally realize how risky traveling West really is.
