The Bureau operated 14 facilities for over 13,000 inmates. The USP Lewisburg opened, it was the first penitentiary built by the new agency.

The number of federal inmates had significant increase. The number of prisons increased as well, by the end of the decade there were 62.

By the end of the century, the Bureau was operating in 95 institutions.

Between 2014 and 2018 there was the first decrease in the number of inmates. Some legislative changes contributed to the decline, such as the First Step Act of 2018.
