    The man who would later become Henry VII was born at Pembroke Castle, in Wales, to Margaret Beaufort. His father, Edmund Tudor, Earl of Richmond had died about three months before his birth. His mother was only 15 years old.

    Elizabeth underwent numerous changes in her status. When she was born, she was hailed as Princess Elizabeth. After Henry VIII had the marriage to Anne Boleyn annulled (Elizabeth's mother), Elizabeth was declared illegitimate. Still later, under the reign of her brother, Edward VI, her status was restored. In the reign of her older sister, Mary, Elizabeth was constantly in danger. As a Protestant, she represented a threat to Catholic Mary.

    Dissolution of the monasteries

    Form 1538 to 1641, Henry VIII and his chief advisor, Thomas Cromwell, forced the closure and redistribution of property of the monasteries of England. Most of the property was acquired directly by the crown, thereby enriching Henry's treasury, although it did not take him long to squander this new money.

    After years of holding Mary Stuart captive, for her protection, Elizabeth at last reluctantly signed the death warrant which authorized the beheading of her cousin, Mary. To English Catholics, Mary was the legitimate Queen of England instead of Elizabeth, whom they regarded as a bastard. Conspiracies and plots swirled around Mary Stuart and Mary did little to discourage these, in fact, she seemed to lend her support to some.
