    When the Monroe Doctorine was written in 1823 by President James Monroe, it was made known that the US had lots of interest in South and Central America. In the Monroe Doctorine, President Monroe stated that European powers were to stay out of the Americans and not colonize any further.

    In the 1800's, the British smuggled opium into the China, causing the Chinese people to become addicted to Opium. The emporer demanded the British to stop, but they did not, thus starting the Opium War. The British defeated the Chinese handily with their superior naval fleet. In 1842, the war ended after the Treaty of Nanjing was signed.

    In 1853, 4 American ships led by Commodore Matthew Perry arrived in Tokyo Harbor. The Japanese were overwhelmed by the United States' superior ships, they had to welcome the Americans. They then signed the Treaty of Kanagawa, allowing trade between the Japanese and Americans.

    The Spanish American war started when the US claimed that Spain blew up the U.S.S. Maine, giving the US a reason to fight, The Spanish were quickly defeated by the United States. From winning the war, the Americans gained control of The Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Cuba.

    In 1910, Francisco Madero ran for president against Porfirio Diaz. Diaz disaproved of this and arrested Madero. Angered by this, Madero called for a revolution, even though the country thrived under Diaz. The revolution eventually succeeded in 1911 when Diaz stepped down.
  • Panama Canal Opens

    Panama Canal Opens
    The Panal Canal was revolutionary in terms of ship transportation. Since columbia would not let the Americans build the canal, the Americans helped Panama rebel against Columiba and as a reward, Panama gave the US the area where the Panama Canal would be built. In 1914, construction had been completed and the canal was opened.
