William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, a story writer and an experienced director form a group in order to make a children's cartoon. At that time, they began with an idea of a cat and a mouse, a very basic idea but yet the topic had all they needed. They started off with a cartoon called "Puss gets the boots" featuring a mouse named Jinx escaping from a very gray and tabby cat named Jasper.

In the mid 1940's the characters Tom Tom was given certain features to make him more realistic.He was given facial wrinkles, shaggy like fur and several eye markings. During their next series, they made the series much more energetic and violent.

Tom and Jerry were nominated up for the "best short subject" academy award. 7 of their animations went on to win the award, breaking disney studio's winning streak earning them the title of the biggest awards winning theatrical animation series.

William Hanna and Joseph Barbera put Tom and Jerry aside, working on other animated series such as "The Flinstones". "Scooby Doo" and "The Jetsons".

MGM decided to revive the Tom and Jerry short series, leading him to contact an european animation outfit, "Rembrandt films" in order to produce 13 different animations to send overseas.
Not only was it revived, it was named the highest grossing series of that time. Kicking Looney Tunes of their throne that had been held for a total of 16 years. -
Chuck Jones started his own animation studio, after being fired from his 30 year tenure at Warner Bros Cartoons. He created his new studio with his partner Les Goldman called "Sib Tower 12 productions". Using this studio, they developed 34 more Tom and Jerry Shorts.

Since Jones was used to his old style, the characters underwent slight changes. Jerry was given large eyes, large ears, light brown fur and a very "porky-pig" like attitude. With Tom, he was given thicker eyebrows (Wile E. Coyote), gray fur, furrier cheeks, a longer tail and sharper ears.

Heavily edited Tom and Jerry scenes by Barbera and Hanna were aired, featuring not an old fat woman, but a young teen lady. Both voiced by June Foray.

Tom and Jerry was once again reunited with the original makers, Joseph Barbera and William Hanna. Producing 48 minute animations every Saturday morning.

Filmation Studios attempted to make a Tom and Jerry TV series. Their version was named, "The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show" which debuted in 1980. Featuring Droopy, Spike and Barney Bear. These had a somewhat "slapstick" humour that didn't work out. Its animation was said to be similar to a different series at that time, (The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse and Heckle & Jeckle). It lasted 2 years from 1980-1982.

MGM was purchased by WTBS founder Ted Turner. Ted sold the company but retained MGM's pre-1986 film. Now Tom and Jerry is property of Tuner entertainmennt (Warner Bros) and have appeared in short films a while later on Tuner enertainment.

Baby Characters were the next best thing with Tom and Jerry. With Droop and his son Dripple and Spike with his son Tyke.

13 half an hour episodes were completed for the Tom and Jerry Tales series, made up out of 3 short animations. Some contained long animations made in 2003 as a 30 minute theatrical cartoon such as "the karate guard". It was then cancelled in 2008.

Tom and Jerry Tales returned in 2012, moved to cartoon network.

There has been an announced Tom and Jerry series coming out, consisting of 2, 11 minute short animations. It will be named the Tom and Jerry Show.
