New Deal Policies

  • Emergency Banking Relief Act

    The Emergency Banking Relief Act part of the first new deal and was an effort to stabilize the banking system and alleviate the tension from the depression. It did this by declaring a national banking holiday stopping the function of all banks until Congress could act, which they did by allowing the federal reserve banks to issue additional currency on good assets so that when banks reopened, they would be able to meet every legitimate call. This is an example of recovery.
  • Civil Conservation Corps (CCC)

    The Civil Conservation Corps was part of the first new deal and was a work relief program that helped unemployed men find jobs on governmental environmental projects. It also planted more than 3 billion trees and made trails and shelters in over 800 parks. This is an example of relief.
  • Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)

    The Tennessee Valley Authority was part of the first new deal and was intended to Provided navigation, flood control, electricity generation, fertilizer manufacturing, and economic development to the Tennessee Valley, a region particularly affected by the Great Depression. This is an example of reform.
  • Homeowners Refinancing Act

    The Homeowners Refinancing Act was part of the first new deal and provided money to homeowners to refinance their mortgages and prevent them from losing their homes. This was an example of relief.
  • Public Works Administration (PWA)

    The Public Works Administration was part of the first new deal and was a large-scale public works construction agency designed to provide employment, stabilize purchasing power, and revive the economy. This is an example of recovery.
  • Civil Works Administration (CWA)

    The Civil Works Administration was part of the second new deal and was a short-term administration which intended to provide temporary jobs for millions of unemployed workers during the great depression. These jobs were primarily construction jobs for buildings and bridges. This is an example of relief.
  • Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

    The SEC was part of the second new deal and was designed to protect investors; maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets; and facilitate capital formation. This was an example of reform.
  • Wagner Act

    The Wagner Act, also known as the National Labor Relations Act, was part of the second new deal and guaranteed basic rights of employees to form unions, take collective bargaining, and engage in collective action. This is an example of reform.
  • Social Security Act

    The Social Security Act was part of the second new deal and provided benefits for various groups of people, including older workers, victims of accidents, the unemployed, dependent mothers and children, the blind, and the handicapped. This is an example of reform.
  • Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

    The Fair Labor Standards Act was part of the second new deal and created the right to a minimum wage and overtime pay for people who work over forty hours a week. It also regulated against "oppressive child labor." This is an example of reform.
