    Sir Robert Borden declared war on Germany. This was neither progress nor decline. Canada entered the war with good intentions. His speech showed great honor and bravery. To support their allies and defend them. But however, Canada entering the war changed Canada some for the better and some for worse.

    First Nations soldiers and Francis Pegahmagabow (Kelly)
    During the war, First Nation Soldiers like Francis were able to serve in the first world war even though it was forbidden until 1915. Despite that, These soldiers were able to fight for the good of Canada. When the soldiers were sent home, nothing changed regarding their situations.

    Enemy Aliens on the Homefront (Enemy)
    Enemy Aliens were people who were from Germany, Ukraine, Croatia, and Hungary. Because of their background, they were treated horribly during the war. The government passed the War Measures Act which limited the freedom of Civilians and made people from the enemy countries able to be deported. Over 80000 enemy aliens were imprisoned at camps. There they were forced to work for a quarter a day doing manual labor.

    Black Canadian Soldiers and Jeremiah Jones (Jeremiah)
    Jerimiah Jones was a Black Canadian soldier who served in WWI. Many Black soldiers that were in the war were discriminated against by the other soldiers. They refused to sleep or eat with the Black soldiers. Jerimiah was recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal. However, because of racism, he was not awarded it.

    In 1917 conscription became the law. This caused a lot of violence and tension between the French Canadians and the English Canadians. In 1918 Joseph Mercier was arrested because he did not have Conscription papers on him. This caused a lot of riots. On April 1st, 1918 Ottawa sent soldiers into Quebec City and people were hurt. 4 civilians were killed and many were injured. This caused a major divide between the English and French.

    In 1920 the residential schools were established for the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit children. Agents were able to forcibly take Indian children from the ages 7 to 15 from their homes and take them to the schools. The Indian children were sexually and physically abused. They were punished for many things like speaking their own language. It was very traumatic for the children. The conditions at the schools were described as a national crime.     In the 1920s modern products were introduced to Canadian households. New appliances made life much easier for housewives. Appliances like new refrigerators promised better help and helped food not spoil easily. Now women didn't have to do everything by hand and these upgrades helped them with their housework.     Frederick Banting (Sir)
    In 1922 Insulin was discovered by a man named Frederick Banting and his colleague. He was accepted into the Canadian Army Medical Corp and helped many wounded soldiers while he was injured himself. The discovery of insulin helped millions of people with diabetes and has continued to do so. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1923. ("U2A6: Frederick Banting")

    Fanny “Bobbie” Rosenfeld (Fanny)
    Bobbie was a world-class athlete. She competed in a race in 1923 and became the Canadian Champion. She won a silver medal in the 100m race at the 1928 Summer Olympics. Even though women were discouraged from doing sports she still was accomplished in her sport and she inspired a lot of other girls that were interested.

    Mary Pickford became one of the most popular actresses in the 1920’s and was very powerful and rich. She is one of the people who made the film the way it is today.
