Timeline - The Influence of Electronic Media, Part 1

  • The Invention of Computer

Alan Turing presents the notion of a universal machine, later called the Turing machine, capable of computing anything that is computable. The central concept of the modern computer was based on his ideas.
Although the computer was invented in the 1936, I first came to learn about it in my 5th grade, in 1995 - 59 years later. The invention of computer has become the most significant invention in my media habit as it later became more compact.
  • The Invention of Flash Memory

Flash memory is a term that applies to two types of chips — the NAND and the NOR. The NAND is used in: memory cards, USB flash drives, solid-state drives, and more. Both NOR and NAND types were invented by Dr. Fujio Masuoka around 1980. I came to learn about the usage of flash memory soon as I got familiar and comfortable with using the computer and the internet, which was year 1999. I mainly used it to save music, internet articles, pictures, and school homework.
  • The Invention of World Wide Web

In 1991 the Internet changed again. That year, a computer programmer in Switzerland named Tim Berners-Lee introduced the World Wide Web: an Internet that was not simply a way to send files from one place to another but was itself a “web” of information that anyone on the Internet could retrieve. Berners-Lee created the Internet that we know today. The World Wide Web is the most prominent discovery, not only to me personally, but to the world of electronic media. I got familiar with it in 2002
  • The Invention of Smartphone

People didn't start using the term "smartphone" until 1995, but the first true smartphone actually made its debut three years earlier in 1992. It was called the Simon Personal Communicator, and it was created by IBM more than 15 years before Apple released the iPhone. I had my first smartphone around year 2004. The Internet was still really slow and the bundle package was expensive. Now my smartphone almost functions as my own PC and the internet speed is really fast.
  • The Invention of WiFi

WiFi was invented and first released for consumers in 1997, when a committee called 802.11 was created. In 1999, WiFi was introduced for home use. I came to learn and use the wifi around year 2003. It made my school work a lot easier and music, radio, and video streaming became so much faster.
