  • Canada at War

    Canada at War
    Instead of being at war automatically when Britain declared war as they were in 1914, Canada declared war on Germany after Parliament voted to go to war.
  • First Troops

    First Troops
    The First Canadian troop convoy sets sail for Britain.
  • Dunkirk Evacuation

    Dunkirk Evacuation
    The British army fled Dunkirk, France was left to surrender to the Germany army in June because there was nothing barring the French capital after the evacuation.
  • Battle of Hong Kong

    Battle of Hong Kong
    December 8-25: The Battle of Hong Kong was the first place Canadians fought a land battle in Second World War. There were over 500 Canadian casualties. The soldiers imprisoned endured brutal conditions and treatment, many didn't survive.
  • Battle of Dieppe

    Battle of Dieppe
    5,000 troops of the second Canadian Infantry Division, along with British troops, attack the French port of Dieppe on the English Channel Coast. The battle resulted in 3,367 casualties including 1,946 prisoners and 907 Canadians died. Two Canadians were rewarded with Victoria crosses.
  • Allied Invasion of Sicily (Operation Husky)

    Allied Invasion of Sicily (Operation Husky)
    July 9-17: Operation Husky was the beginning of the Italian Campaign. Allies attacked from air and land. The battle was an Allied victory and resulted in over 562 Canadians KIA, 1,664 wounded and 84 imprisoned.
  • D-Day

    D-Day
    Troops landed on beaches along the Normandy Coast which were codenamed, Sword, Juno, Gold, Utah and Omah. Resulting in about 1000 Canadian casualties, 359 KIA.
  • Falaise Pocket

    Falaise Pocket
    August 12-21: The Falaise Pocket is closed by the Allies and the Germans seventh army is trapped. Canada suffered 5,679 casualties and Germany suffered 10,000 losses.
  • Battle of Scheldt

    Battle of Scheldt
    The First Canadian Army is given orders to clear the Scheldt of German occupiers. The first attacks began on the 13th.
  • Battle of Scheldt (part 2)

    Battle of Scheldt (part 2)
    Canadian troops are able to seize the town of Woensdrecht at the entrance to South Beveland. By the 3rd of November, the south shore of the Scheldt is free. The battle resulted in 6,367 Canadian casualties.
  • Capturing Walcheren Island

    Capturing Walcheren Island
    November 6-8: The capital of the Island of Walcheren is secured and by the 8th, German forces are defeated.
  • Battle of Rhineland

    Battle of Rhineland
    Feb 8-March 10: Fought by the First Canadian Army and Ninth US Army. Tactical support was poor and flooded fields from the weather made the fight more difficult. The banks of Rhine which was the last major line of German defence is secured. Canada suffered 5,300 casualties.
