On June 28th 1914 the Archduke of Austria, Franz Ferdinand and his wife were killed by a man called Gavrilo Princip. Princip was a Serbian man, a part of a secret Serbian society called 'The Black Hand' -

Austria declares war against Serbia
After the death of the archduke and his wife, Austria declares war on Serbia to avenge the assassination of their leader. -
Germany declares war against Russia
After Austria declared war on Serbia, Germany knew that Russia had connections and supported Serbia, this worried Germany, as they had demanded Russia to stop mobilization. When Russia didn't meet these demands, Germany called war on Russia. -
Belgium invaded by Germany to get to France
Germany wanted access to go through Belgium, so they demanded access, when they were refused they invaded. Because Britain and Belgium were allies, Britain was upset about the invasion and declared war on Germany. -
Battle of Tannenberg
This war was between Germany and Russia, and it only lasted four days. In the end, Germany was victorious and many Russian soldiers were killed in this battle. -
First battle of the Marne
This battle was Germany against France and Britain, they were trying to get back at Germany for invading Belgium. The French and British were victorious. The battle ended the on the 12th of September. -
Turkey joins the war
On october 30th Turkey was brought into the war and aligned with Germany. -
Germans find new weapon
When the Germans found Lethal Chloride, they made a move on the Allies and fired 150 tons of the gas. The firing of this gas was the beginning of the first battle of the Ypres, this battle lasted until May 25 of that year. -
Italy joined the war
Once Italy joined the war they declared war on Germany and Austria. -
Germany declares war on Portugal
When Portugal joined the war, they aligned with Great Britain. Germany declared war on Portugal because Great Britain demanded that Portugal would steal the German ships. -
Battle of Jutland
This battle is said to be the largest naval battle throughout the war, this battle was between Britain and Germany. It ended on June 1 of that year. -
Battle of the Somme
In this battle over 1 million men were either killed or seriously wounded. This battle was was fought by the French and British empires against the German empire. This battle didn't end until November 18th of that year. -
USA enters the war
At the beginning of the war, the Americans wanted to stay neutral, and not pick a side, up until Germany started to pestering them and stealing their ships. After this got out of hand, the USA joined the war and declared war on Germany. -
Russia leaves the war
The Russians agreed to to peace with some of the main Allies, and left the war. -
Second battle of the Marne
Also known as the battle of the Reim. This battle was the final battle between Germany and the western front of world war one. This battle ended on August 6th. -
The Fighting Ends
On the 11th hour, 11th day and 11th month, the fighting of the first world war finally came to an end. It officially ended when the Germans signed an armistice to end the fighting. -
World War One ends
The treaty of Versailles is signed by the Germans to officially end the war. -
