Archduke Franz Ferdinand and wife assassinated

On June 28th 1914 the Archduke of Austria, Franz Ferdinand and his wife were killed by a man called Gavrilo Princip. Princip was a Serbian man, a part of a secret Serbian society called 'The Black Hand'

Austria declares war against Serbia

After the death of the archduke and his wife, Austria declares war on Serbia to avenge the assassination of their leader.

Germany declares war against Russia

After Austria declared war on Serbia, Germany knew that Russia had connections and supported Serbia, this worried Germany, as they had demanded Russia to stop mobilization. When Russia didn't meet these demands, Germany called war on Russia.

Belgium invaded by Germany to get to France

Germany wanted access to go through Belgium, so they demanded access, when they were refused they invaded. Because Britain and Belgium were allies, Britain was upset about the invasion and declared war on Germany.

Battle of Tannenberg

This war was between Germany and Russia, and it only lasted four days. In the end, Germany was victorious and many Russian soldiers were killed in this battle.

When Portugal joined the war, they aligned with Great Britain. Germany declared war on Portugal because Great Britain demanded that Portugal would steal the German ships.

At the beginning of the war, the Americans wanted to stay neutral, and not pick a side, up until Germany started to pestering them and stealing their ships. After this got out of hand, the USA joined the war and declared war on Germany.
