1 - 550 CE
Funan rises and falls. This was the first known kingdom in the Lower Mekong River Region. -
550 - 700 CE
The state of Chenla replaces Funan as the dominant kingdom. -
834 - 1145 CE
The Khmer Empire expands and Angkor Wat is then built by Suryavarman II. Buddhism becomes more imortant. -
1177 - 1178 CE
The Cham kingdom invades much of the Khmer Empire's eastern territory. -
1181 - 1219 CE
Jayavarman VII defeats the Chams and extends the Khmer Empire even further to include present-day Laos, Thailand and Burma. -
1243 - 1298 CE
This is the time of the rule of Jayavarman VIII. He renounces Buddhism and orders that Buddhist temples and images be destroyed so that Hinduism becomes the main religion. -
1300's (CE)
Buddhism grows in importance and once again becomes the main religion of the Khmer Kings. -
1431 CE

1432 CE

1440's (CE)
The rulers of the Khmers move the capital of the Khmer Empire to Phnom Penh. -
1593 CE
The Siamese (Thai) king attacks and defeats the Khmer king. -
1700's (CE)
Vietnamese armies regularly attack the Khmer forces in the Mekong River delta and end up defeating the Khmers. The approximate modern borders of Cambodia are now determined. This is the end of the Khmer Empire. -
802 CE

770 - 834 CE Jayavarman II merges smaller states in order to create one large empire. The capital is in the Angkor region of Cambodia.
