    Belgium enters Rwanda
    In the course of World War I, shortly after an assault from Germany, Belgium sent its troops into Rwanda and Burundi and established a more direct rule. For instance, the simplified and centralised the power structure, while also introducing projects in health, agriculture supervision, public works, and education, including improved agricultural techniques to reduce the crisis of famine.
  • Belgium issues out identity cards

    Belgium issues out identity cards
    Shortly after Belgium forces take control of Rwanda, the troops issue to the Rwandan people special identity cards. These cards would label each individual Rwandan as one of either Hutu, Tutsi, Twa, or Naturalised. Before these identity cards had been issued, a Hutu who had a good-sized wealth good pay to become a Tutsi, but these new cards prevented that from happening.
  • Rwandan Revolution

    Rwandan Revolution
    Over the years, tension bewtween the Hutu ethnicity and the Tutsi ethnicity continue to build and build on a steady incline, until it finally ignited the Rwandan Revolution. This revolution was started shortly after the beating of a Hutu politician, , Dominique Mbonyumutwa, by Tutsi men. In response, the Hutus initiated an enormous massacre on the Hutus, chasing them from power and replacing their political positions. Around 80,000 Tutsis were killed.
  • Juvénal Habyarimana takes power

     Juvénal Habyarimana takes power
    In 1973, Juvénal Habyarimana became the third president of the Republic of Rwanda via a military coup; the military led a campaign to overthrow the government, and was successful. Under Juvénal Habyarimana, Hutu discrimination still exsited, but he was able to produce economic prosperity and a reduce in the violence against the Hutu ethnicity.
  • Rwandan Patriotic Front

    Rwandan Patriotic Front
    On October 1, 1990, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) invaded Northern Rwanda. The RPF was made up of mostly Tutsi refugees. This started the Rwandan Civil War. There were a great deal of loses on either side, and the war looked very undecided, but by 1992, Habyarimana had be weakened, and the two sides were able to make peace negotiations.
  • Arusha Accords

    Arusha Accords
    At the conclusion of the Rwandan Civil war, the two sides were able to make peaceful negotiation talks. The result of these talks were the Arusha Accords. These were five accords signed in Arusha, Tanzania on August 4, 1993, by the government of Rwanda and the rebel Rwandan Patriotic Front.
