Timeline of Revenue Acts

  • Proclamation Line of 1763

    Proclamation Line of 1763
The proclamation line confined colonists to settle east of the proclamation line. The British government did this so that the Indians would have their own land. But the problem was that it wasn't really the governments land to give, people who owned land on the East side of the proclamation line were supposed to just leave their land. The colonists didn't follow this law and they protested about how it should be repealed. The British government didn't really do much to about it (bl.uk).
  • Sugar Act Passed

    Sugar Act Passed
The sugar act was a law that forced all the colonists to pay taxes on sugar. The sugar act was enacted to pay for how much money the British government lost during The Seven Years War. This made the colonists very mad because they had to give up some of their land to the Indians already. This made them mad because the reason they had the war was to get more land. And they got more land but then the government took the land away and made them pay for the money that was lost in the war (bl.uk).
  • Stamp Act is Passed

    Stamp Act is Passed
The stamp act forced people to pay taxes on every piece of paper they owned such as certificates, newspapers, deed's to land, and even playing cards. This infuriated the colonists it even caused the sons of liberty to form and almost all of the colonists united and they made petitions and protested. The British government realized that this was making the colonists angry but they didn't care in fact they thought about what other laws they could pass to tax the colonists more (Kristina Edgar).
  • Declaratory Act Enacted

    Declaratory Act Enacted
The stamp act is repealed. But the British government also says in the Declaratory Act that they have the right to tax the colonist. The colonists are very happy and they believe that there is no longer a reason for an uprising. But the British Governments plan was not to stop taxing the colonists but to do it in a different way that would be more appealing to them. But that didn't really work (bl.uk).
  • Townshend Revenue Act

    Townshend Revenue Act
The Townshend Revenue Act made it so that most items imported to Britain were taxed. This made colonists furious because they had to pay more money for their goods. They were also mad because they had just gotten the government to repeal the stamp act. There best argument against this law came from a paper written by a lawyer named John Dickenson. This paper inspired and united the colonists. The British government continued to tax items imported despite how it made the colonists feel (HISTORY).
