Timeline of Revenue Acts

  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act

This act aimed to stop smuggling of sugar and molasses by providing stronger enforcement. The colonists were not happy with this, as they did not like the control. The British government did not listen to this and enacted it anyways.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act

Aimed to help pay for the Seven Years War by putting a tax on all stamps. The colonists were obviously opposed as they saw it another way Britain tried to get money from them. While it was originally enacted, the British government repealed it a year later.
  • The New York Restraining Act

    The New York Restraining Act

This act aimed to punish the colonial assembly of New York for failing to fully comply with the Quartering Act. Colonists generally sympathized with New York and viewed the act as a violation of their rights. The British government suspended the New York Assembly's ability to legislate until they fully complied with the Quartering Act's provisions.
  • The Revenue Act

    The Revenue Act

The key items of the act included taxes on various imported goods such as tea, glass, paper, and paint. The colonists saw it as a violation of their rights. The British government sent more troops to the colonies to maintain order in response
  • The Indemnity Act

    The Indemnity Act

This act sought to partially repeal the duties imposed on certain goods, such as tea, in the American colonies. Colonists generally welcomed the partial repeal of the Townshend Act's duties through the Indemnity Act. The British government's reaction to the Indemnity Act was to try to find a balance between maintaining control over the American colonies and avoiding further unrest.
