Timeline of Revenue Acts

  • Sugar Act

Taxed the sugar and molasses in the colonies.
The colonists fought back and it was repealed, instead the Stamp Act was put into place.
  • Stamp act

Taxed all legal documents and paper products because all documents had to be printed on a stamp paper.
The colonists did not go for it. This was one of the taxes that cause the revolt.
The British thought it was a good idea because of the money they were raising. They thought this until the colonists started boycotting.
  • Quartering Act

This act forced colonists to provide housing, food, and drink to British troops.
The Colonists didn't like this, like many of the other acts passed, the fought back until Britain repealed it.
The British liked this act, because it provided the troops a place to stay, without them having to pay for it.
  • Declaratory Act

Was an act the stated that Britain still had total control over the colonies in America.
Obviously, the colonists did not appreciate this. They took this as the British taking away their self-governing government.
The British enjoyed this because it showed their control over the colonies and helped them regain full control.
  • Townshend

Put taxes on all paint, paper, lead, glass, and tea.
Colonists did not like it, it caused the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and many other events.
The British thought this was a good idea, and were confused as to why the colonists kept fighting back.
