Timeline of Revenue Acts

  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
The Sugar Act was a tax placed on sugar and other everyday items that the colonists use. The colonists tried to protest the sugar act because they did not like it. Really, the colonists did not like any of the acts passed by the British government. The British government tried its best to tax the colonies, but they just boycotted everything and had to come up with new things.
  • Currency Act

    Currency Act
The Currency Act was an act that made it so that colonists could only buy imported goods with silver or gold. The colonists did not like this because gold and silver were not necessarily easy to come by. They didn't want to waste their money on something that they should not have had to. The British government liked the idea of this act because they could get more of the colonist's valuables that way. If they got more of the colonist's valuables, the people of England wouldn't be as mad at them.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
The Stamp Act was a tax on all papers important papers that the colonists were to use. The colonists absolutely despised this not necessarily because they had to pay taxes, but because their taxes were not fairly represented. The British absolutely loved this idea, because the country was so far in debt from the French and Indian War, it was having the colonists "pull their own weight."
  • Townshend Acts

    Townshend Acts
The Townshend Acts were proposed by Charles Townshend and it also taxed imported goods to the American colonies. When he proposed this idea to Parliament, they all thought it was a wonderful idea, and the vote was unanimous to pass the act.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts were a series of harsh laws that the colonists got as a punishment for rebelling so much against the other acts. Obviously, the colonists were not happy that they were being punished.
