Timeline of Revenue Acts

  • Navigation Act

    Navigation Act
This Act stated that all ships trading between England and the British colonies needed to be British vessels or colonial vessels. This was an Act to mainly target the Dutch who also had colonies in America. In retaliation, the Anglo-Dutch War ensued between the Dutch and British.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
This proclamation stated that the colonists were not allowed to settle westward of the Appalachian Mountains for fear of rekindling a conflict between the French or Indians. Many colonists wanted to settle westward of the Appalachians, and did so because they didn't understand the British's point of view. The colonists disregarded the proclamation, and there wasn't much the British government could do about it from across the ocean.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
This Act put a tax on sugar, wine, coffee, and molasses. Many colonists boycotted the British merchants that sold the taxed goods. Many British merchants in the colonies complained to the British Government about their severely decreased sales because of the boycotts. Two years later, the British Government repealed the Act.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
This Act made it mandatory to put an official stamp on any documents, such as marriage licenses, wills, or deeds. Without the specially stamped paper, the documents were considered unofficial and void. Even playing cards and newspapers needed to be printed on stamped paper. Some of the colonists refused to print their documents on the special paper in opposition to the Act. The Stamp Act Congress petitioned the British Government to repeal the Act, and a year later Parliament did.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
This Act was enacted by the British in order to raise the salaries of the British officials in the colonies. It put taxes on paper, silk, tea, and other miscellaneous imports. It also suspended the New York legislature because of it's refusal to obey the Quartering Act. They reignited the colonist's anger about heavy taxing, and many colonists showed hostility towards British officials. Boycotts were also common during this time. On the day of the Boston Massacre, the Townshend Act was repealed.
