Planting the seed
We planted some seeds into a pot with some dirt. Then we watered it and left it on the window sill. -
Seed Germination
The first stage in the life of a sunflower is germination. A sprout shot toward the top of the soil. -
Seedling
The sprout has small leaves, no longer than 1 ½ inches. It has grown a little bigger over the last week and a half. -
Vegetative
The sunflower stem has leaves longer than 1 ½ inches. All the main growth has occurred with the stem thickening and growing taller, and producing leaves at regular intervals on the stem. -
Bud Stage
The bud began to show at the top of the stem. The leaves and bud are moving to follow the course of the sun throughout the day. -
Flowering
The bud began to open. -
Ripening
The back of the sunflower’s head, petals and leaves began to turn yellow and then brown. The stem and head began to dry out and eventually all of the seeds became loose and fell out.
