Oct 27, 1838 Gov. Lilburn Boggs issues order to exterminate or expel Mormons from MO. Period: Oct 27, 1838 to Apr 1, 1839 Mormons are forced to leave MO and settle Nauvoo, IL. Jun 27, 1844 Joseph Smith and his brother, Hyrum Smith, are murdered while being held in jail on false charges. Feb 1, 1846 Mormons began migration from Nauvoo, IL. Period: Apr 1, 1846 to Apr 1, 1847 Temporary settlements are set in Iowa and Winter Quarters in Nebraska. Apr 5, 1847 First pioneer company left Winter Quarters for the Salt Lake Valley. Jul 24, 1847 Brigham Young and first pioneer company arrive in the Salt Lake Valley. Jul 1, 1849 Uath was organized as a territory. Jun 1, 1856 First handcart companies began trek to Utah.
