Timeline of Acts

  • Proclamation of 1763

    The Proclamation of 1763 was used to forbid the colonists from settling anywhere west of the Appalachian Mountains and also to prevent conflict between the Natives and the British. This angered the colonists and they felt like it was taking away their right to travel and go wherever they wanted to go.
  • Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act was used to put an end to the trading and smuggling of sugar and molasses from the West Indies. The colonist reacted to this act through boycotts and protests.
  • Currency Act

    The Currency Act was passed because colonists were currently running low on bills and coins, therefore they came up with their own money. This caused the colonists to protest and also their was a decrease in colonial economy
  • Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act imposed taxes on the colonists and required them to pay taxes on paper since the king had to figure out a way to make money and pay off the debt he was in after the war. The colonists became very upset that they had to pay taxes and due to this the colonists started protesting and threatening tax collectors.
  • Quartering Act

    The Quartering Act made the colonist feed and house British soldiers and also required them to pay for supplies. This made the colonists mad because the soldiers were coming into their house, eating their food, taking their resources and were expecting the colonists to treat them with the royal respect and treatment they "needed." Also the colonists were upset about being taxed without representation.
  • Declaratory Act

    The Declaratory Act was used to show the colonists that Parliament had the right to tax them and do whatever they wanted to the colonists because of their power and authority. The colonists were upset about this. Also, this act was used as a reaction to the failure of the Stamp Act.
  • Townshend Act

    The Townshend Act put taxes on a variety of goods such as glass, tea, paper, etc and also gave Parliament the power to search homes for items. This made the colonists more upset because they were being taxed and they boycotted British goods.
  • Boston Massacre

    British soldiers in Boston opened fire on a group of American colonists killing five men.The colonists angry and they talked more and more about how to be free from British rule and have their own country.
  • Tea Act

    The Tea Act provided the right to ship tea to the colonies and it taxed people for the tea they purchase. The colonists were upset because now the British East India Company had control on tea sales in the colonies and they still had to pay taxes on the tea. The colonists then started dumping loads of tea overboard on ships.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party was a political protest that was started by the Sons of Liberty. During this event, tea from Britain was destroyed and thrown into the sea and this took place because the British government was making colonists pay taxes on the shipments of tea brought into America and the colonists did not want to have to pay taxes, therefore it resulted in them throwing the tea into the sea.
  • Intolerable Act

    The Intolerable Act was passed against the colony of Massachusetts until Boston could repay the money. This act was passed in response to the Boston Tea Party, where the colonists dumped $10,000 of tea in the harbor. This act caused the colonists to feel scared and they felt like this act was a violation of their rights.
  • First Continental Congress

    The First Continental Congress was a meeting by the colonies in response to the Intolerable Acts that the British had enforced. The result was creating a declaration that stated the rights for the colonists and stopping trade from the British. The colonists responded to this event through the form of unity.
