Timeline: 1850-1861

  • John Brown

    John Brown was considered a leader of the Anti-slavery movement between the North and the South during the 1850s - 1861. he was a huge part of anti-slavery and was a big figure for the slaves because he fought for them. He participated in events such as the Harper's Farry raid and the Pottawatomie Massacre which led to the North and South separation because of the things that John Brown did for the Slaves.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was significant during Slavery because Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the book in order to show what slavery was actually like in her perspective. This book would lead to yet again the division of the Northern and Southern states because it would offend the Northern states. This book would soon be banned in the North despite its huge success in a short period of time. Uncle Tom's Cabin was only one of the few books that gained huge success during this time period.
  • Republican Party

    The republican party also led to the growing divide between the North and the South because of Senator Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. They cause the republican party to separate into northern and southern Republicans. The purpose of the Republican party was just to stop the expansion of Slavery but this angered both the Southerners and Northerners.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The Kansas-Nebraska was very contradictory because it led to the division of the North and south because its purpose was for Kansas to use Popular Sovereignty in order to decide whether there should be slaves in Kansas. As always there were those who opposed slavery and those who were for slavery. To make things worse the Kansas-Nebraska Act led to the down fall of the Union because it broke the Missouri Compromise which was keeping the Union from falling apart.
  • Election of 1856

    In the Election of 1856, President Buchanan was elected as president. Lincoln believed that since he was elected that slavery would most likely never end soon. Lincoln believed that the only way that slavery would cease to exist was by a proper legislature. Buchanan opposed slavery but since there was already huge tension between the North and south he tried not to take sides. Even his lack of involvement in the slavery issue didn't stop the tension from escalating.
  • Brooks-Sumner Incident

    the Brooks-Sumner Incident happened on May 22, 1856, on the United States Senate floor. it was between Preston Brooks, a pro-slavery from the south and Charles summer wh was an abolitionist from the North. Charles Sumner was attacked with a walking cane and was badly injured and every fully recovered. this angered the northerners and led to more problems between both the North and South. Brooks was then applauded by southerners. He was sent many cases to replace his broken cane.
  • Bloody Kansas

    Bloody Kansas was when the fight really broke out between the Northern and Southerners. This would definitely lead to the Civil war. Bloody Kansas was a war between the pro and anti-slavery forces. This was bound to happen because of everything that was happening during that time and all of the previous events. This event basically foreshadows the Civil war.
  • Lecompton Constitution

    Pro-slavery owners from Kansas determined a constitution that would benefit their state in order to have slavery. When the other antislavery states found out they began to boycott the Kansas constitution which allowed them to protect slaveholders and exclude African Americans from their own version of the Bill of Rights. therefore the Lecompton Constitution was formed. This constitution would lead to the Civil war later on because of each side opposing their points of view on slavery.
  • Dred Scott

    Scott v Sanford had a huge impact on slavery because Scot wanted to sue Sanford because he believed that Scott wasn't a free African American although he went into a free state and live there. Since he was of African American descent he, therefore, didn't have the right to sue in a federal court, hence why the court ruled against him in the Scott v Sanford case. This made the Southerners/Northerners mad once again because of the decision of the court against Scott.
  • House Divide Speech

    The House Divide Speech given by Abraham Lincoln was important and significant because it allowed the North to be able to have slaves because of the Dred Scott Decision. his speech was important because it said that only the government had the power to end slavery. This angered both the north and the South because they were the ones who were trying to end slavery on their own.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    The Lincoln Douglas debates were a series of events between Senator Stephen A Douglas and Abraham Lincon. They wanted to run for thw=eir opposing political parties. this split the parties into two which were the Nothern party and the Souther party.
  • Harper's Ferry

    harpers ferry raid was led by John Brown and his sones in order to help the slaves rebel against their owners. he claimed that he only wanted to help them out by freeing the slaves because he didn't believe it was justified that they should be enslaved. John Brown was charged for treason because of his raid of Harpers ferry.
  • Election of 1860

    John Bell didn't choose to talk about slavery in their election of 1860, rather he chose to talk about the constitution. Although Lincoln won the election. this was a vital part of slavery because he would help liberate the slaves and abolish slavery. this event would lead to the civil war which the US would win and free the slaves.
  • Secession

    During Secession, the Southern states were trying to resist the Northern states. They wanted to expand slavery towards the west. this meant that slavery would change and the souther states were taking control.
  • Lincoln's 1st Inaugural Address

    Lincoln makes many promises in his inaugural address. One of which was that he wouldn't interfere with slavery. He just wanted it to stop spreading. He didn't want to take away slaves.
