Uncle Tom's Cabin
The book was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe and it talked about all these misdoings to slaves so it was considered anti-slavery. It caused more tension between the North and the South because it showed how a slave was actually being treated and the book became very popular so now the people had a reason to be even madder. -
Republican Party
It was made to go against the Kansas and Nebraska Act and overall slavery. They wanted to stop the expansion of slavery and they fought in the Civil War against the South. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
This allowed the people in Kansas and Nebraska to decide if they wanted to have slavery in their territory. This practically got rid of the Missouri Compromise and it allowed slavery in the area of the Louisiana Purchase. This led to an imbalance in the government as it gave the south more power. -
Election of 1856
James Buchanan representing the Democrats and John Fremont representing the Republicans were running for presidency. The Democrats ended up winning which made all the Republicans made causing even more tension between the South and North so this would contribute to the start of the war. -
Bloody Kansas
Was caused by Kansas being a slave state or a free state. People were angry because they wanted their beliefs to go with it. 55 people died in this time period due to all the fighting. -
Brooks-Sumner Incident
Preston Brooks was for slavery, while Senator Charles Sumner wasn't, so Brooks beat Sumner with a cane. -
Dred Scott
He fought in the Supreme Court to be a free citizen and later failed. -
Lecompton Constitution
They wanted to make Kansas into a slave state while the citizens themselves didn't want it to be. It ended not going through. -
House Divided Speech
Lincoln said how they should handle slavery so they won't be split. He talked about the Scott vs Sanford case and how if they don't change something they might be allowing slavery to come into the north. -
Lincoln Douglas Debates
Lincoln and Douglas were debating and both had different opinions on things. One being slavery, while Lincoln was an abolitionist and wanted to get rid of it, Douglas wanted to keep it because he thought it was moral. Lincoln later asked him a question that would cause the Democratic party to split. This made Douglas no longer wanted by the Democratic party. This debate helped bring Lincoln more attention and helped him out in the election. -
John Brown
He was a mad man who set slaves free and armed them. He led a raid. He was considered a "martyr to the antislavery cause". He wanted to get rid of slavery even if it had to be done in a violent matter. -
Harper's Ferry
John Brown led a small group of armed slaves to raid the federal armory. They failed. This increased tensions between north and south because the North thought that the group was sort of in the right and that they should revolt because they were slaves and the South of course didn't agree with what they were doing. -
Secession
South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina seceded from the union, which led to the civil war. -
Election of 1860
Lincoln won this election and he wanted to abolish slavery and cause of this states left the Union which would lead to them converting into the confederates who would fight in the war. -

Lincoln wanted to take the slaves away from the south and wanted to enforce laws on states that left the union
