Time Toast: Cells

  • The Microscope Is Born

The invention of the microscope made it possible for people to discover and learn about cells.
  • First Microscope

Hans Jansen and his son make one of the first compound microscopes. It was made from a tube with a lens on each end.
  • Robert Hooke's Microscope

Hooke improved on the compound microscope.
  • Hooke's Observation

Hooke looks at the structure of a thin piece of cork using a compound microscope he made himself.
  • Leeuwenhoek's Microscope

Leeuwenhoek's microscope only had one tiny lens but could magnify a specimen up to 266 times. He was the firs tperson to see bacteria and other one celled organisms.
  • All Plants Are Made Of Cells

Matthais Schleiden came to the conculsion that all plants are made of cells.
  • All Cells Come From Cells

Rudolf Virchow finds that cells are formed from existing cells.
  • Cell Theory

The cells theory is the belief that all living things are made of cells, cells are the basic unit structure and function in living things and all cells come from existing cells.
  • All Animals Are Made Of Cells

Theodor Schwann concludes all animakls are made of cells.
  • Modern Compound Light Microscope

Ernst Abbe and Carl Zeiss made a compound light microscope. A modern compound light microscope can magnify a specimen up to 1,000 times.
  • Since The Early 1930's...

Since the early 1930'2, we have developed different types of electron microscopes.
  • Transmission Electron Microscope

Ernst Ruska created the first electron microscope. An electron microscope can only exsmine dead specimens but are very useful for looking at the the cell structure of something.
  • Scanning Electron Microscope

This microscope sends electrons over the surface of the specien instead of through it. The results are in a more detailed 3-D image.
  • Scanning Tunneling Microscope

Scientists can see individual molecules on the outer layer of the cells. They can magnify a specimen up to 1,000,000 times.
