Cortes needed more people to defeat the Aztec with so he found many cinty-states that disliked being dominated by the Aztec. They gathered allies by means of force. To scare the Aztec he showed off his firepower of his muskets and cannons.

Moctezuma sent girfts of jewels and featherworks to the Spanish cortes hopeing for him to leave Veracruz. The spanish leader should either submit to that power or depart. When Cortes puts on the sacred feathered robs of the god, it confirmed he was the reutrning god, Quetzalcoatl. Although he just viewed the clothing as a gift.

Massacre of Unarmed Aztec

Tensions between the Spanish and the aztec increased. Cortes recieved a message that the Spanish governor sent men to arrest him for disobeying his orders.
Aztec began to prepare for the festival honouring the god Huitzilopochtli. Nobles, priests, and warriors dance at tje celebration. Men surrounded the courtyard and massacred the unarmed worshippers. Nobles and priests had been killed. Spanish had to retreat to cortes palace. Spanish and Aztec's peaceful agreement was gone.

Unforseen Enemy

Aztec die from smallpox

Aztec has been dying from smallpox that had been brought by the Spanish. Half of the population died from the disease in those five months.

Moctezuma dies

Cuitlahuac, chosen after the death of Moctezuma, died from the disease after being leader for only 80 days.
