In 1441, slaves were exported from Africa directly to Portugal. This shows change as slaves quickly became the most profitable export, pushing other goods such as bullion or spices to the side.

While there is a continuous theme of European conquest and rapid expansion, there were massive changes between 1450 and 1850 where commerce in Africa went from being regular goods such as gold and spices to becoming completely dominated by the trade of humans, slave trade. This dark method of obtaining profit did create a stronger nation though, as African states became more powerful in the end.

in 1484, Portuguese missionaries are brought to Kongo in hopes to westernize the Royal family and further establish their connection to obtain more slaves. This shows continuity as slaves continued to be a major export from Africa to Portugal.

In 1562, the British begin their involvement in slave trade. This shows change as now slave trade is expanding further than just between Portugal and Africa.

in 1652, the Dutch establish a colony at Cape of Good Hope. This shows change as the Dutch become another player in the world of slave trade while previously they weren't involved.

From 1700 to 1717, Osei Tutu united many Akan clans to form the empire of Asante. This shows change as previously broken up individual clans were finally able to form a strong empire together under the leadership of Osei.

In 1713, the English obtained the right to import slaves to the Spanish Empire. This shows change as European nations began to work with each other in the slave trade.

In the 1720's, the Kingdom of Dahomey became prevelant and extremely powerful due to the profitability of slave trade and their access to firearms. This shows change as the Kingdom of Benin never wanted to be involved with slave trade though European prescence did presssure them into some, the neighboring Dahomey responded much differently and accepted the Europeans with open arms as they brutally traded their people.

In the 1790's, the abolitionist movement gained strength. This shows change as there had not been much opposition to slave trade prior to these movements.

In 1792, there is a slave uprising in Haiti.This shows continuity as slaves continue to try and revolt against their captors.

In 1833, the British abolish slavery in the West Indies. This shows change as this is the first step at complete abolishment of slavery, and is the first instance where slavery is abolished anywhere.
