THE WAR BEGINS

  • Germany invades Czechoslovakia

    Germany invades Czechoslovakia
    German troops march into Czechoslovakia. This was after German took control of some sections through the Munich Pact. During hte invasion Germany took over hte rest of Czechoslovakia.
  • The Soviet-Nazi Pact

    The Soviet-Nazi Pact
    Representitives from both the Soviet Union and Germany signed the Nazi-Soviet Non-Agression Pact. This ensured the two countries would not attack eachother while also protecting Germany from having to fight a two front war. The pact was broken by Germany on June 22, 1941
  • The Invasion of Poland

    The Invasion of Poland
    Germany invaded Poland and defeted the Polish army within weeks. Warsaw surrendered on September 27th 1939. Nazi Germany occupied the remainder in 1941 when they invaded with the Soviet Union.
  • The Phony War

    The Phony War
    This is the period of time in WW2 after war was declared but the western side of Europe did nothing. Was essentially a period of inactivity that continued to May of 1940.
  • Canada Enters the War

    Canada Enters the War
    Seven days after the war had officially begun Canada declares war. This was our first independant declaration of war.
  • The Invasion of Norway, Denmark, Holland and Belgium

    April 9, 1940 – Germany invaded Denmark and Norway.
    May 10, 1940 – Germany invaded France and Belgium.
    May 15, 1940 – Holland surrendered to Germany
    Germany took over these countries for several reasons such as to provided better naval bases, provide natural resources and provide training land. In all it was to futher increase their war effort.
  • The Invasion of France

    Germany invaded the Low Countries of France. Britiain and France got pushed back to the sea by the quickly attacking Germans.
  • The Miracle at Dunkirk

    The Miracle at Dunkirk
    British and French soliders who were trapped by the German army were evacuated using small boats and then transfered to larger boats. About 338,000 soliders were saved.
  • The Fall of France

    Six weeks after Germany invaded, France signed an armistice that divided France. The north and west went to Germany who also kept almost 2 million french soliders as prisoners.
  • The Battle of Britain

    The Battle of Britain
    Germany wanted control of the Channel as it would stop the British Navy from attacking through it. To take control of the Channel they would first have to take control of the air by defeating the British Air Force, which is exactly what they tried to do.
  • Operation Barbarossa

    Germany invades Russia. This is the largest military attack of WW2. Also this broke the non-agression pact that Germany had signed.
  • The Attack on Pearl Harbour

    The Attack on Pearl Harbour
    The Japanese made a suprise attack on the U.S (Pearl Harbour Naval Base in Hawaii) as a preventitive measure to make sure they did not interfere with Japan's other planned military actions. This led to the American entry into WW2. The following day the U.S additionally declared war on Japan.
