Diplomats from every nation met for a conference in Geneva, Switzerland. Among other things, it was decided that Vietnam would be seperated at the 17th parallel into South and North Vietnam. This was done in order to end any hostility.

The United States, France, Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines, Thailand and Pakistan formed SEATO (Southeast Asia Treaty Organization). In 1954, the SEATO treaty was signed in an attempt to stop communism from spreading in the region.

Corruption and religious differences in South Vietnem weakened the Ngo Dinh Diem government. President John F. Kennedy sent more than 16,000 US troops to help aid the situation, but the government was overthrown a few days later.

USS Maddox reports of a second attack by North Vietnam so president Johnson commands for the US to retaliate. The retaliation is the first bombing of North Vietnam.

American involvement in the wat is at its peak when it bombs Laos and Cambodia and crosses over international borders.

Life Magazine publishes pictures of 242 Americans who were killed in Vietnam that week. At this point, there is very little public support of the war and the amount of American deaths exceeds 33,000 people.
