    The last U.S. military unit leaves Vietnam. In over a decade of fighting, some 58,000 U.S. troops have been killed.     The American Radio Service network begins to broadcast the prerecorded message that the temperature in Saigon is astronomical and endangering. This signals the start of Operation Frequent Wind, the emergency evacuation of Saigon. American personnel begins on making more than a dozen assembly points throughout the city. Soon, some 7,000 Americans and South Vietnamese are flown to safety. The next day, North Vietnamese troops go to Saigon and the South Vietnamese government surrenders willingly.
