    Frank Woodruff Buckles lied about his age and joined the army at 16. He said he was two different ages before they finally accepted him. He once was aged as 18 and then 21.
  • The Assassination of the Archduke

    The Assassination of the Archduke
    Archduke, Franz Ferdinand, is assassinated in Sarajevo by a Serbian, Gavrilo Princip. While traveling to Sarajevo, a group of Serbians had began plotting to assassinate the archduke. They failed multiple times but had finally succeeded since the archduke decided not to leave Sarajevo.

    Austria- Hungary declares war on Serbia; afterwards Russia starts to stabilize their troops. There had already been some problems going on in Europe during this time. And the assassination had brought a cause to begin war with Serbia. Serbia tried to deal with the dispute outside of the courts but instead Austria-Hungary declared war.

    Germany Starts a War with Russia

    Germany declares war on Russia, France, and begins to invade Belgium. When Britain heard this they declared war on Germany. Germany had encouraged Austria-Hungary to start the war with Serbia. Since Russia was an ally with Serbia they were brought into the war. At the time France and Russia were also allies so that as well brought France into the war. Germany's violation of intruding Belgium feared Great Britain to take over all of Europe and would cause everyone to go into war with each other.

    He first that his job was going to be a bank clerk for the army. But the was assigned to drive around visiting VIP's. When he was in Winchester he drove a motorcycle with a side car and would take on official assignments with other officers. He was later promoted to an ambulance.

    The British tried to stop Germany from receiving any materials and supply from ships. So Great Britain a naval blockade on Germany's port. The naval blockade took place from 1914 to 1919. The naval blockade didn't only affect Germany but Austria-Hungary and Turkey too.

    After creating a secret treaty with Germany and attacking the Russian troops. The Ottoman Empire had finally succeeded into getting into World War I, on the side of the Central Powers. The Ottoman Empire had entered the war with a bad military and economy after already being in three wars. So the Ottoman Empire really relied on the other Central Powers.

    In Germany Frank's job was to take prisoners to Lind berg, Germany on a train. While the trained had stopped Frank had decided to exercise and the train was about to leave. He had to ride with the prisoners in the freight car. About several hundred prisoners were taken there to Lind berg.

    The Germans had began to use submarines against the allies supplier ships. Germany was the first country to announce unrestricted submarine warfare in the Atlantic. Since Britain and the United States were close trading partners, Germany decided to attack the United States supplier ships. This caused of tension with president Woodrow Wilson, if America should start a war with Germany.

    Bulgaria had thoroughly thought about which Powers they should join. For economic reasons and needing powerful defenses to attack Serbia, they decided on joining the Central Powers. The leader of Bulgaria at the time had considered Serbia their "greatest foe."

    When Frank worked in the jails in Germany he would have to interact with them and try to gather information from them. This was scary time for him. Sometimes the Germans would pin the soldiers and try to kill those who were working.

    The Zimmerman Telegram was sent from Germany to Mexico, but was intercepted by Great Britain. On the telegram Germany asked if Mexico would like to join the war. And in exchange for joining the war Germany would help Mexico take back territory from the United States.

    President Woodrow Wilson went to Congress to discuss about declaring war on Germany. He discussed about how Germany had violated of their pledge to suspend the unrestricted submarines, and also tried to convince Mexico make war with America. The United States had finally decided to join the war after Germany had used their submarines to attack the passenger and supplier ships; the United States declare war on Germany.

    The first global conflict had killed from an average of 9 million to 13 million people. Germany had finally agreed to surrender on November 11, 1918. All the nations had stopped fighting while terms of peace were being talked over and negotiated.

    The Treaty of Versailles was signed in the Palace of Versailles on June 28, 1919. The treaty had imposed rigid restrictions on Germany. President Woodrow Wilson had proposed the "Fourteen Points," this was that no nations can commit the "crime of war." But the actual terms of the treaty included secret arrangements for German territories among the Allied Nations. Many people believed the treaty is what led to World War I.

    Frank's Woodruff Buckles class "E" was granted to leave of absence. And on November 13th, 1919, Frank Woodruff Buckles was discharged from serving World War 1. He was also payed at his discharge for serving in the war. Even though the war ended in 1918 he was still on duty.
