They acquired the Panama Canal project from the French for $40 million. When Panama heard about this, they were angry, but were also happy because they needed this.

    The Panama Canal was needed to make a shorter route from San Francisco to Cuba. Theodore Roosevelt wanted this canal to be built because it would help improve global shipment and the U.S. navy to defend their nations. In 1902, Roosevelt offered to purchase this land from Columbia for $10 million dollars. The yearly rent was $250,000.

    In the harbor of Columbia, U.S. gunboats waited to support the rebels. Also U.S. marines went to Colón to protect Panama From Columbian soldiers. Americas was shocked by Roosevelt's lead in the revolt. He was judging his military in the seas. America found out the the Republic of Panama has a lot of independence.

    The French actually signed the treaty to get Panama to our control. After the treaty, America had permeant control. It is a 10 mile wide zone across the Isthmus of Panama. America wanted to pay $10 million dollars. They also wanted to pay yearly rent of $250,000 dollars. Once they got the land Roosevelt said "Make the dirt fly".

    As we started the project of building the Panama Canal. A problem came up and of course it was sickens of malaria and yellow disease, not the engineering. William C. Gorges created a plan to clear bushes and drain swamps. The mosquitos carried those illnesses. The workers had to clear everything before working on the canal.

    Roosevelt went to check on how the project was coming along. He stayed there for 17 days, he was the first President to go out of the country during his term. Roosevelt wanted to improve the working conditions and healthcare. That just delayed the project even more. He also posed in a machine for a picture and dug a little bit.

    By this day they had cleared yellow fever and reduced malaria. The project had 3 major tasks. They had to cut through a mountain, build a dam, and create giant locks for the non levelness of the canal. The men worked day after day in the hot sun and through the storms. Mudslides were normal to the canal. Over 20,000 men lost their lives.

    Wilson sent his navy to Mexico and killed over 100 Mexicans. South American nations sent peace talks to Mexico, so we wouldn't have a war with them. Francisco Villa went to a town, called Columbus and killed 18 Americans. We waited at the Mexican border for 11 months before we cancel the mission. We never caught Villa, which was very disappointing.
