  • Bicameral Legslator

    Delegates to the Constitutional Convention agreed that a bicameral legislature was best. Meaning, that it is made up of two very different parts of the Congress

  • Salaries

    n 1789 salaries were $6 per day. This low pay deterred some people from running for Congress.

  • Census

    The first census was taken

  • House Numbers

    After the 1810 census, the House had 186 members;

  • House growing

    Grown to 435 members.

  • Capped

    In 1929 Congress capped the number of House members at 435. Now each census decides how these seats will be divided among the states.

  • 12th Amendment

    Moved the session syarting date to January

  • Georgia Case

    Wesberry v. Sanders, the Court ruled that the Constitution clearly intended that a vote in one congressional district was to be worth as much as a vote in another district.

  • District Lines

    After the 1990 census, several states drew new district lines to increase the voting power of ethnic or racial minorities.

  • Modify

    In 2006 the Supreme Court decided a case that allowed states to modify the procdure.

  • Losing Seats

    Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and Missouri lost seats after the 2010 census

  • House

    100 women were serving in the House of Representatives (19 percent).
